The State of the Move

September 7th, 2016

The view from our bedroom.

The view from our bedroom.

So today makes a week.

Last Wednesday, we were breaking our backs loading the U-Haul, trying to calm yowling cats on the ride in the U-Haul, unloading the U-Haul, and then dying.

Okay, so we didn’t die. But for a minute, it felt like we were going to.

My knees seem to be healing up nicely. After carrying boxes and furniture up a ramp, down a ramp, and up stairs, they felt like they were just going to snap. But they didn’t. And now, though the bad one (that has been “the bad one” since I woke up on the day of my 6th birthday skating party and couldn’t put any weight on it) is rather creaky, they’re mostly back to normal.

My hands, however, are not. The tips of my fingers have been pins and needles pretty much every minute since moving day. They start to feel normal if I just let them hang by my sides for an hour, but who has time for that? Definitely not this little gray duck. I mean, I live in this big, beautiful house, now, and it just demands that I clean it constantly because it would be a damn shame to let it get messy and be less beautiful.

I’ve never felt that way about a house before.

And it is definitely big. The kitchen is at least twice the size of the kitchen in our old place. There’s an actual dining room, rather than a tiny alcove for a table. The living room in the old place could probably fit in the living room here three times. Our bedroom is probably twice the size of the old one, so we reassembled the Cocoon thinking it would still take up too much space, but it doesn’t. Not even remotely.

There’s two more bedrooms that we haven’t organized, yet. They’re upstairs. One is going to be an office, and one is going to be a guest bedroom so Mom has a place to stay when she visits. I figure I’ll let her decorate it since she’ll be the one who uses it most. She’s already decided she’s going to buy the bed. She figures it’ll be cheaper for her to buy the bed than pay for a motel room out here. She’s probably right.

It’s so beautiful out here. I haven’t really gotten out to take pictures yet. I need to do that. You’re not going to believe this place. Rolling hills and mountains and dairy farms and fields upon fields of corn and soybeans and hay. I watched a farmer turn his hay while bringing the laundry in off the line. That was pretty cool.

Horses graze on the hill adjacent to our backyard. Amish people live about four miles up the road and drive their buggies past our house all the time. It was weird seeing one go by at night with headlamps and turn signals. I had no idea they were outfitted that way.

There’s a beautiful lake with an amazing beach and some pretty incredible primitive campsites four miles in the other direction. We went for a walk there, the other day, and M was able to get some pretty amazing shots of a fawn.

Our town has one streetlight and no stoplights. Everyone is friendly and cheerful. We walked down the road, to see what we could see, and of the 10, or so, cars/trucks/tractors/motorcycles that drove by, only two people didn’t wave, and all of them gave us a wide berth. That shit just doesn’t happen in Schenectady. In fact, when we walked around our neighborhood in Rotterdam, where there are no sidewalks, people would actually aim their cars at us.

Our news no longer consists mostly of mugshots and crime scene footage. There’s no one being a dick to us for no reason. (Speaking of which, in Rotterdam, we were having trouble with our tires losing air, and assumed we needed new tires, but since we’ve been here, they seem rock solid. We’re starting to think the kid next door was letting the air out.) And the only anxiety I’ve felt all week has been specifically because I love this place so much that I don’t ever want to have to leave.

We’re pretty much in Heaven, y’all. I’m not really sure how this happened. But I’m so very grateful that it did.

Life is good.

💜

Moving sucks, I have done it plenty of times, but I am sure you will get used to it and you will love every minute it was worth.
