Zombies, and Creative Writing Teachers, and Pizza

January 16th, 2015

It’s the second full week of 2015, and I’m already failing at keeping my resolutions. The year is also failing at being nice to me, so I say we’re even.

I want you to know that it’s not that I haven’t been writing. I have! I just haven’t been finishing anything here because I’ve been too busy trying to finish the things I’m writing in Pages.

I’m on a fucking roll with a zombie story I’ve been working on.

For the record, this new zombie thing I’m doing? It’s really fucking weird. Like, I said to M, “I’m writing a zombie story,” and he wrinkled his eyebrows at me and said, “That’s weird.”

I am so not a zombie fan. The only zombie movie I’ve ever seen that I actually liked was Shaun of the Dead. I really, really want to get better at first person shooters, but until recently, I’ve refused to play any game that is based on zombies, or ultimately comes down to zombies, so Call of Duty was out. I did not (will not) watch The Walking Dead. I rolled my eyes super hard when I realized John Taff’s anthology had a zombie story in it (Sorry, John!)–but was pleasantly surprised when I actually liked it.

“It all comes down to zombies!” has become an inside joke between M and me, because you can bet that if you’ve found some horror thing with a kickass plot (game, book, whatever), the twist is that the monsters are zombies.

I am not afraid of zombies. I don’t hate zombies. I don’t even really dislike zombies. It’s just…at this point, zombies are overdone and unimaginative because it all comes down to zombies.

So why the fuck am I writing about zombies? I DON’T KNOW!!!

Since we started playing 7 Days to Die, I’ve been dreaming about zombies. Mostly just dreaming about the game, or being in the game, until the other day when I dreamed that it was the zombie apocalypse for real, and then I had a really fucking good idea for a zombie story. Something that hasn’t been done to death, and done in a way that you don’t see many stories done. And now I can’t stop working on it.

I’ve only got about 6,000 words in. I keep getting stuck, or distracted, or M plays podcasts all day. But I figure the more I continue to refuse to allow getting stuck to stop me, and I pick it back up when I can focus, I’m doing all right. Regardless, I refuse to be one of those writers who takes ten years to write one book. I mean, Game of Thrones is good, but come on!

Some other things that I’m working on…

  • A fictional story about a serial killer that no one is allowed to read until it’s finished because it’s brutal, but the end makes it.
  • Two book reviews (one is for a series of two books, so it’s like I’m working on three…shut up, it is, too).
  • Researching pregnancy and BDSM for a No Stupid (Kink) Questions email I received over the holidays.
  • A project word count tracker thingie that Sidney Bristol put out for free that totally threw me off yesterday. I mean, I sat there and stared at it for, like, 20 minutes, freaking out that I would…do it wrong. <.< Apparently, Sidney Bristol is my creative writing teacher, and I don't want to get an F on my word count spreadsheet. But hey, at least my creative writing teacher is a NY Times and USA Today best seller, eh? I? Have issues. I also have almost 12,000 words in (not counting this post) so far this year, which is huge for me.
  • Cleaning out my inbox from the holidays. 3000 emails, y’all. ~cries~
  • Spending less time on Twitter. It’s not even a New Years Resolution, so it’s like a bonus resolution, right?
  • Picking a WordPress theme for our game server site and my food blog. We host multiple game servers, and are putting together a blog site with info about the games on the servers, and what we’re doing to make those games “ours” and not just like every other server out there. I’m not planning on putting it on any sort of schedule, and the posts will practically write themselves, so it shouldn’t be too much of a hassle. We’ll see.
  • Oh, hey, btw, we’re working on a game server blog.
  • Pizza experiments. I make a bangin’ Philly cheese steak pizza. Fo’ sho’. So much that M keeps saying maybe we should do a pizza shop instead of a diner. But there are 981239813947587364897162983541892364897162398476123 pizza shops in our area. I don’t want to be just another pizza shop.

I am going to try to get a No Stupid (Kink) Questions up describing erotic spanking later today. It’s started, I just don’t know if I’m going to have time to finish it.

We’ve got a company party to go to tonight, and I have a lot to do to be ready, not the least of which being run to the store. I’m so not happy about going, and neither is M, but there are people going simply because we are, and we haven’t seen some of them since last year’s party, so at this point, even if we weren’t already obligated because M’s expected to be there, we’d be obligated because of that. So…we’re going. Which means I don’t have a lot of time to write. If I don’t finish it today, I’ll give it the old college try tomorrow, but weekends are M’s, wholly and completely, unless he gets stuck working, so we’ll see what happens.

Anywho, thanks for reading, and not busting my chops about not posting anything here this week. I swear, at some point this year, I’ll get into the swing of things, and be able to tackle my fiction and the blog at the same time. I just haven’t reached that point, yet.

I’m addicted to the comics and show “Walking Dead” so I would love to read your zombie story when it’s completed!!

I agree about zombies being overdone, but I’m happy that you’re writing something you’re excited about *smiles*
