When we brought her home…

December 5th, 2009

Master found some older shots of Sunshine.  Some pictures from when we first brought her home.  Long before we got Baby.  While she was still in her white and blue cage and hadn’t finished molting for the first time, yet.

She was always on guard, but unless you put your appendages in the cage, she was like a rock.  She’d sit and stare at you until you went away.  Unless you moved too fast.

She was just a scrawny little thing.  The skinniest bird in the store.  And they had her in a cage all by herself.  If her beauty wasn’t enough to catch my eye, that would have done me in.  I hate to see birds kept alone.  They need a flock.

Over time, she grew into a regal hen.  Though Baby can definitely be a bastard, when she had enough, the fun and games stopped.  He listened to her.  He never listens to me.

How’s this for silver lining?

Now that Sunshine’s passed, Baby is playing whistling games with Master and me.  He’s making quieter versions of Zedd’s firetruck and robot noises.  He’s playing with his toys like they’re going out of style.  And when he got out of the cage by mistake (I was cleaning it and didn’t think he’d try to get out.  He never has before.  So I left the door open.), he hopped right up on mine and Master’s fingers like it was nobody’s business.

Every once in a while, though, he’ll remember, and he’ll cry for a little while.  It makes me want to scoop him up and snuggle him to pieces.

Master immediately offered to take me to get a new bird.  He asked me if I was ready.

I’m not.  I mean, I haven’t even taken her downstairs yet.  She’s all wrapped up in her coffin, sitting on a tray table.  I can’t stop crying.  Over a stupid bird who wouldn’t even let me touch her.

Baby and Zedd are warbling like crazy.  And it sounds empty… hollow… without her sweet voice.

We decided to wait at least a week.  I’m not sure what she died of.  After going through some websites Cinnamon helped me find, I realize she was showing symptoms months ago.  I don’t want to buy another parakeet only to have that bird get sick and die, too.

I’m gonna miss that bird.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I have a male budgie and I know that I’d be devastated if I lost him. She was a beauty.
