No Stupid (Kink) Questions: Episode 19 – 50 Shades of Exercise

September 30th, 2013

NoStupidKinkQuestionsGandhi said that if you want to change the world, you have to be the change you want to see. To that end, Insatiable Desire brings you No Stupid (Kink) Questions, a series of questions asked by novice kinksters around the web. If you have a question for us, leave it in comments, or send it to rayne (at) insatiabledesire (dot) com with “NS(K)Q” in the subject.

Question 19:

So, I was reading 50 Shades of Grey, and Christian requires Anastasia to meet with a personal trainer. He says it will further her body’s ability to accept the things he plans to do to her. Should I be working out, or something? Am I gonna get hurt if I don’t?

If you’re using 50 Shades as a BDSM guide, you’re already doing it wrong. However.

There are certain activities that are easier to handle and/or perform if you’re physically fit. This is true of everyday life, BDSM, athletics. A person is not going to just go from sitting on the couch all their life to winning a marathon overnight. Similarly, one must train their muscles to stretch and bend to be comfortable (or not dislocate a joint) in some of the positions riggers like to tie their victims.

Physically fit is not synonymous with skinny, no matter how much the beauty and weight loss industries are trying to convince us otherwise.

A physically fit person will not get short of breath after a short period of strenuous activity. They will have more range of mobility and physical strength. They’ll have better stamina and endurance.

So should you go out and hire a physical trainer to come in 4 times a week, and a dietitian to build your menus and shopping lists? I mean, sure, if you’ve got the disposable income, go for it. Is it necessary?

Well, you should always do some exercise. Our bodies need it to remain in full working order. You should also try to eat right, but that’s subjective. What’s right for you may not be right for your partner, your friends, your family. But how far you need to take these things depends entirely on you and what you’re looking to achieve.

If you want to be tied in Little Thunderbolt Pose, you’re gonna have to do some yoga. If you want to be spanked while you’re doing a handstand, you’re going to have to work on your upper body strength. If you want to be able to hold an awkward position for a long period of time, you’re going to have to work on your strength, stamina, and balance, so probably some Pilates is in order. And you can get all of it on the web. YouTube is awesome.
