Guest Posts: Your Responsibility as the Host

August 22nd, 2013
Seriously?

Seriously?

This is just a quick tip for those of you who allow guest posting on your websites.

So there’s a blog that allows guest posts, and some people disagreed with some things that were said in a guest post on that blog. When @MrWills_HoT commented with his concerns, the blog owner basically said, “I didn’t write it, it’s not my fault.”

So, I responded. I couldn’t help it. I get so sick of companies, websites, media outlets, etc. poo-pooing off their responsibilities to their audiences with “I didn’t write/say/make/do it. It was my employee/franchise partner/guest blogger.” If you’re putting it out there with your name on it, you are responsible for it. Period.

This is what I said:

So one day, I went to Dunkin Donuts, and the service was awful. My sandwich was burnt. My coffee was cold. And they gave me the wrong sandwich for my husband. My bad for not checking stuff before we walked out, I guess. But when we got home, I stopped over to the DD website, and left them a message in their customer comments section.

The email I got back was a form response that basically said the store we went to was a franchise owned by someone else, and there wasn’t much they could do. Thing is, it’s THEIR name on the door, and THEM the franchise owner is making look bad because no one thinks about the fact that most fast food restaurants aren’t actually owned by the named company.

Just a friendly reminder that this is your website, and your name on the door. Even if you didn’t write it, you’re responsible for the info you put out there.

As a blog owner, you have a responsibility to make sure any message you put out into the world is something you can stand behind. If it’s not, DON’T FREAKIN’ POST IT!

Just a friendly PSA.

You are awesome, and I agree completely except in circumstances where it is EXPLICITLY stated that it is the guest’s opinion and it is an interview.

    I’ll cosign on this.

@Mr. Will You are allowed to post differing opinions, sure. Especially as a multiple-contributor publication. But you are absolutely responsible for making it clear that you don’t back it, or the world is allowed to decide that you do, and hold it against you. And trust me. They will. This is something I dealt with almost daily as EIC of SexIs.
