Product Review: Antibacterial Toy Cleaner by California Exotics

June 11th, 2010

CE-9770-00-1_6836_1Ooo, what’s that?

That would be California Exotics Antibacterial Toy Cleaner, and I really wish I’d read the reviews before buying it.  Though I must say, from reading the other reviews, there’s a possibility I got a bad batch.  But I’ll explain what I mean further in.

What’d it come in?

It comes in a 4.3 fl. oz. clear plastic bottle with a purple spray nozzle, and the lettering is mostly purple.  The bottle doesn’t leak and sprays in most directions without much trouble.

How’s it made?

Ingredients: Deionized Water, Sodium C 14-16 Olefin Sulfonate, Disodium Lauroamphodiacetate (and) Sodium Trideceth Sulfate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Propylene Glycol, Triclosan, Citric Acid, Methychloroisothiazolinone (and) Methylisothiazolinone, Tetrasodium EDTA

What’s it for?

Supposedly, it’s for cleaning toys.  But it can also be used for protecting toys between thorough cleaning.

I assume you just spray it on and rinse it off.  That’s how I used it, anyway.

How is it?

Rayne’s Rating:
Pros: Cons:
protects against bacteria growth chemical smell and taste
spray range too wide
difficult to control
no directions

I swear I musta been doin’ it wrong or something.

Every time I used this spray (we’ve long since run out), it came back in my face.  No matter how I held the bottle, or where I was in my house.  At first, I thought it was the naturally occurring breeze formed in our bathroom by the heating vent blowing out warm air, and the exhaust fan sucking it up.  So I tried it with the fan off, and in the living room and bedroom, and holding it away from me, and… It still came back in my face.

And!

Everyone keeps saying it has no smell.  But to me, it smells, and tastes, distinctly chemical.  And it burned my tongue.

NO! I didn’t intentionally get this stuff in my mouth.  Ew.  I love y’all bunches, but not enough to taste products that aren’t meant to be tasted.  But that’s how much came back in my face.  I could taste it for a good five or ten minutes afterward.

It doesn’t really do much by way of cleaning toys.  Even with the chemical smell of the cleaner, this toy doesn’t do away with smells on materials that tend to retain them.  And it definitely doesn’t help with stains.  I have no doubt that it kills /protects against bacteria, but you’ll still need to use something else on porous materials and/or toys with intricate texture.

To me, this seems more like a spray you’d use if you’re in a hurry to get things put away.  Sort of a protection against bacteria growth until you can actually get the toy in the sink and wash it correctly.

Notice I say, “to me”? That’s because there are no instructions included with this toy cleaner.

I won’t be buying this product again.  Especially since my discovery of Climax Bursts, Antibacterial Toy Cleaner.

Where’d ya get it?

I bought Antibacterial Toy Cleaner that store, but you can pick up a bottle at PinkCherry.com.
