Reading and Writing

May 10th, 2007

I enjoy this freedom to read whatever I wish. It allows me to poke my
head into books I shied away from out of protest in high school, sci-fi
and fantasy, genres He has absolutely no interest in whatsoever. He'll
give me weird looks and the occasional "Why would you ever want to read
that?" But never a "No. You cannot read that." Yet, anyway.

One thing Master doesn't control, for the most part, is my reading
material. I'm mostly allowed to read anything I want to. If I express
an interest and He can find it He gets it for me. This ranges, so far,
from fiction to nonfiction to opinions. It's not that He can't control
it. He could if He wanted to. He just doesn't.

There have been books He's required me to read. The Gor novels, The
Sword of Truth series. But never any that He's said I absolutely cannot
read. I'm sure if any book I read ever affected the way I behave or the
thought process He's worked tirelessly to instill in me, that would
change in an instant. But they haven't. And they won't.

I enjoy this freedom to read whatever I wish. It allows me to poke my head into books I shied away from out of protest in high school, sci-fi and fantasy, genres He has absolutely no interest in whatsoever. He'll give me weird looks and the occasional "Why would you ever want to read that?" But never a "No. You cannot read that." Yet, anyway.

So I'm reading George Orwell's "Animal Farm". I just started it. I remember thinking it was boring in high school. But I also remember my teacher drilling into our uninterested heads how political the book was. I simply was not interested in reading to be preached to or debated with. I'm still not, really. Which is probably why I don't ever see (or look for) the "hidden meaning" in stories.

Now don't get me wrong. I could listen to Master talk about a book all day long. I could listen to Master talk all day long. But hearing the passion with which He discusses a story and watching His eyes light up like a child's… it's incredible. I swear if He'd only go into politics He could make at least half the population see the error of their ways just by smiling. Gods forbid He should actually open His mouth and speak. We'd be in some serious trouble then.

In high school, I vowed I'd never write for anything but pleasure. Not my pleasure. My reader's pleasure. There would be no "hidden meaning" behind my stories. No political agenda. My characters would not reflect my ideals or attempt to turn people to my beliefs.

But then I realized, everyone will think they have some hidden meaning anyway.

My point, anyway, was that I like being able to read whatever I want to. I need to find "!984". I heard it was a good book. I aced the test in school by just listening to everyone in class talk about it. I swear I don't know how I made it through the parts of school I did pass.
